The Echo Wave Project is an immersive art installation that uses EEG technology to visualize mental reflections as abstract art, aimed at enhancing dialogue around mental health and promoting inclusivity. This project integrates real-time EEG data from the EMOTIV INSIGHT headset into TouchDesigner to manipulate a dynamic particle system, creating a personalized visual experience. Through colour therapy principles, the visualizations align with emotional states such as stress, relaxation, and excitement. Key research findings include the effectiveness of colour psychology in enhancing user engagement and the potential for EEG-driven art to foster greater empathy and understanding. The project highlights the intersection of technology, art, and mental health, offering innovative insights into user experience and data-driven art.
Traditional mental health interventions often lack the emotional engagement necessary to foster true understanding and empathy. They can be clinical, impersonal, and inaccessible to many individuals. The Echo Wave Project addresses this gap by leveraging EEG technology to translate mental states into dynamic visual art. This approach not only simplifies mental health but also provides a unique platform for self-expression and connection.
For the Echo Wave Project, I led the creative and technical development of transforming EEG brainwave data into an interactive visual experience. My role focused on bridging research and design—translating complex neurological data into a compelling, real-time art piece using TouchDesigner.
I was responsible for integrating the EMOTIV EEG headset, processing live data streams, and designing the visual system that responded dynamically to participants’ mental states. Beyond the technical implementation, I played a key role in shaping the user experience—ensuring the interaction felt intuitive, immersive, and emotionally engaging.
As part of this project, Sujay Rambadue – our video production lead, created a short video documenting the creation of the Echo Wave project. Take a look to see more behind the scenes of what went into the creation of this meaningful interactive art exhibit.
